How course registration works

Compulsory courses ready, electives chosen, units checked, department approval.

For administrators and students · about 5 minute read · updated 31 October 2026

Each semester, every student registers the courses they will take. StudyPat shows each student the right courses for their programme and level, checks the units, and sends the registration to the department for approval.

What the student sees

Step by step

The administrator opens registration
On the Course registration page. Students cannot register while it is closed.
The student chooses and submits
Save draft keeps their choices without sending them. Submit registration sends it to the department. A submission needs at least the minimum units and never more than the maximum.
The department decides
Approve a registration, approve a whole programme and level at once, or send one back with a note such as "Please add MTH 201". The student sees the note and resubmits.
Approved registrations become class lists
Lecturers see the approved students for each course they teach, and enter scores for exactly those students.
Registration closes
Press Close registration at your deadline. Approved registrations can still be reopened for a student if needed.

Why a student might be refused

Courses a student is not offered are ignored even if someone tries to submit them, and compulsory courses are always included. A student can never register for a course outside their programme's list for their level or an earlier one.

Frequently asked questions

Not themselves. The administrator can reopen it, which returns it to a draft the student can change.

You set them under Grading & GPA, for example 15 and 24. They are checked when a student submits.

A course the student must take again, usually because they failed it. It is offered under courses from earlier levels, and marked "Failed: retake" once results are published.
